Water Flosser Questions And Answers
Hopefully, by now you’ve noticed how easy it is to buy and own a water flosser. Though, it’s likely that you still have a few questions! We’ve compiled some of the most informative questions and answers about water flossers that we could find to make your switch from dental floss to water flossing easier.
What is a water flosser?
Water flossers are oral health devices that you can use at home. They mostly feature a motor with a pump a water reservoir, and a special tip. The motor and the pump work together to force a stream of pressurized and pulsating water which flows from the reservoir, coming out of the tip.
The water is typically aimed at the teeth or gums. By doing this, you work to remove plaque, food particles, and bacteria. By using the pulsating water, it can also help stimulate the gum tissue and increase circulation.
While water flossing and string flossing are both beneficial and an important part of your oral care routine, some studies have found that using a water flosser helps reduce plaque further than string flossing.
How do you use a water flosser?
Using a water flosser is quite simple, but it can still take some getting used to. Here are the steps to properly using a water flosser.
- Ensure that your water flosser has properly been charged.
- Fill the water reservoir with warm water, and ensure that the reservoir is properly attached. Some prefer cold water, but warm water is often easier on your teeth and gums.
- Place the tip into the holder.
- Adjust pressure or pulsation control to your preferences. If it’s your first time, we recommend using a lower pressure.
- Lean over the sink, or ensure that you are somewhere where any leaking water won’t cause a mess. This may be easier in the shower.
- Place the tip into your mouth and close your lips.
- Turn the device on.
- Aim the water just above the gum line, starting at the back and working towards the middle. Pause on each tooth so that you have a chance to empty any extra water from your mouth into the sink.
- Once you’ve finished with all of your teeth and gums, turn off the unit. Take out the tip you’ve been using, and clean your device.
Why choose a water flosser over typical dental floss?
Water flossers are typically better at removing plaque, food particles, and bacteria compared to dental floss. Plus, dental floss can cause irritation and pain that you don’t see with water flossers. An additional benefit to water flossing is how much easier it is to water floss when you have braces, crowns, or dental implants.
Do you still have to brush your teeth?
Even with water flossing, you should still be brushing your teeth twice a day. The water flosser is meant to be a replacement for string floss, but is still only an additional care method for your teeth on top of brushing with an electric toothbrush.
Is water flossing for everyone?
We all have incredibly unique sets of gums and teeth. While water flossing is an excellent option for some, it’s not perfect for everyone, nor is it perfect all of the time. If you have sensitive gums or teeth, the water may be too hard on you. Though, you can still try and use different modes of pulsation and intensity to see if it helps alleviate some of the pain.
Because water flossing requires electricity, water, and a proper restroom, it can be tough while traveling. We recommend that you always have some back up dental floss for occasions where you do not have access to these privacies. For example, you would likely not want to break out your water flosser at an airport, whereas it would be more acceptable to use regular string floss.
If you still aren’t convinced to buy a water flosser, we think that you should try one out just to prove yourself wrong. We know that these devices are amazing both in terms of oral hygiene care and general usefulness. Once you start using a water flosser, you’ll be amazed that you went so long without having one in your home!
